Cape Town

FREEDIVING & FORAGING in beautiful cape town

Cape Town is known for being one of the most stunning and picturesque cities in the world: from the impressive Table Mountain Range, the beautiful Cape Winelands, the majestic Cape Point to the endless beaches, great surf and incredible culinary scene. But very few people come to this Peninsula to explore the spectacular world beneath the waves… our “blue backyard”.

The famous tip of the vibrant Cape Peninsula has various names: Cape Point, the Cape of Storms or the Cape of Good Hope… and now also the home of ‘The Octopus Teacher’!

Here one can experience two very diverse ocean currents – the warm Agulhas coming from the east and the cold Benguela coming from the south – resulting in an abundant and very unique marine ecosystem and home to some of our favourite landscapes and creatures.

Learn the art of underwater freedive foraging with expert freediving instructors Hanli & Peter, joined by acclaimed coastal forager Roushanna Gray from Veld & Sea. This experience will include freediving training, breath-work and yoga combined with learning various foraging skills ranging from regenerative harvesting practices to discovering intertidal and underwater ingredients and their culinary applications.

Who is this for..? This experience is for nature lovers who want to have a delicious experience in the beautiful outdoors with world class guidance at a unique location. Anyone who has an interest in the ocean, wanting to increase their breath-hold and gain underwater confidence and people interested in healthy living, marine ecosystems and self-sufficiency. Chefs and foodies wanting to explore foraged and local food and discover new ingredients, or freedivers who want to learn sustainable foraging.

ITINERARY

3 restful nights / 4 adventurous days

DAY 1         Arrival to BOUlders beach villa

We are so excited to be hosting our Freedive Forage experience in the beautiful hamlet of Boulders Beach; home to historic villas, beautiful small coves and of course the enigmatic African Penguin!

We will meet for a welcoming cocktail and a delicious and healthy dinner prepared by Roushanna and the Veld & Sea chefs.

DAYS 2-4    flexible days for optimal ADVENTURES!

Our days will be planned around the wind, swell and surge. This will ensure that each day will be tailored to the best the Cape has to offer taking all the conditions into account.

A TYPICAL DAY:

Our days will either start or end with a specially designed yoga and breath-work. Throughout the week we will build on your theoretical and physical freediving (and foraging!) skills, ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning experience.

We will alternate intertidal foraging experiences with deeper foraging requiring us to freedive for our food. Together we will explore some of the lesser known coves and beaches of the Cape Peninsula, showing you the best the kelp forest has to offer and the delicious gifts the sea gives us, making our way into the ocean where we gently forage for edible seaweeds and shellfish. While our beautiful coastline is abundant with food, we will be foraging sustainably and regeneratively, focusing only on the seaweed that is prolific in the area and the non-indigenous mussel species, stressing how to treat our wildlife with respect. A couple of days we will be hosted at the bright and breezy Veld & Sea Glasshouse. where we will enjoy fynbos infused cocktails while processing our foraged ingredients, learning about the culinary applications through talks and demos.

All of our days will culminate in long-table feasts paired with award winning wines.

FALSE BAY HIGHLIGHTS

On top of acquiring the skills to deepen your freediving practice and discover the wildly delicious world of coastal foraging, you will also learn about the marine ecosystems of False Bay and the challenges and success stories along our coastline. We will host this course from legal pick zones (Non MPA areas) and we will supply valid mollusc foraging permits.

The iconic marine animals and ecosystems we will explore are:

There are several CAPE FUR SEAL colonies around the Cape Peninsula. These seals are like the Labrador puppies of the sea and they love playing with freedivers. Shallow water with magical fairyland swim-throughs in the kelp, along with the most personable of the Cape characters, makes this one of our favourite days out in Cape Town!

KELP FORESTS are like mysterious old growth forests just below the surface. A dense aquatic woodland area full of life! On all of our dives we will be exploring the kelp and their inhabitants (small species of shy shark, octopus, a myriad of reef fish, tiny nudibranchs and colourful urchin beds to name a few) but purely as a landscape the kelp forests are inspiring and beautiful.

The AFRICAN PENGUINS play an integral part in the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area story. Listed as critically endangered, these small characters deserve all the appreciation and support they can receive. We will visit several of their nesting, bathing and playing sites. You will get to learn about the fight for their survival, life cycle and unique adaptations. If we’re lucky you will spend time in the water and see how their clumsy land waddles turn to underwater agility!
